The Dilmart has flourished in Southwestern Montana for 51 years. It was originally established in 1890 by Hugh McCaleb and George Hughes on Montana Street. In 1938 it was bought by Elmo Winn and moved to Bannack Street.
In 1948 Elmo Winn sold the store to his brother Floyd Winn and Eldon Noble. In 1954 Raymond F. Curtis and Dean H Wright bought Winn’s Incorporated moving their families from Salt Lake City to Dillon.
In October of 1956 Dean and Ray decided to change the name of Winn’s and came up with a creative idea to do just that. They posted wanted posters asking for information leading to the capture of a new name for Winn’s, Inc. The reward for this information was a brand new GE Deluxe Automatic clothes dryer Model #DA520N. No strings attached. The winner of the contest named it The Dillon Home Mart and they shortened it to The Dilmart.
In 1988 The Dilmart moved to the corner of Glendale and Idaho into the building that housed one of finest hotels in Southwestern Montana. They began building the hotel in 1910 and completed the luxurious Andrus Hotel in 1917. The Dilmart features Italian stained glass windows, Italian fretwork and a skylight.
The Dilmart is now owned by Fred Curtis and Veeta Alley with a goal of providing friendly professional service to the community.
